Shrek Card Match

Released in 2001, Shrek is an American computer-animated fantasy film inspired by William Steig’s fairy tale picture book of the same name. Directed by Andrew Adamson and Vicky Jenson in their directorial debut, the movie features the voices of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, and John Lithgow. Serving as a satirical take on children’s fantasies, particularly Disney animated films, Shrek follows the story of an ogre named Shrek (voiced by Myers). Shrek’s swamp is invaded by fairy tale creatures banished there by the villainous Lord Farquaad (voiced by Lithgow). To reclaim his swamp, Shrek strikes a deal with Farquaad to find him a queen in exchange for the deed to his land.

Accompanied by a chatty Donkey (voiced by Murphy), Shrek locates Princess Fiona (voiced by Diaz). As they escort Fiona to Farquaad for their arrangement, Shrek develops feelings for the princess and uncovers a surprising truth about her. The film rights were initially acquired by Steven Spielberg in 1991, with plans for a traditional animated adaptation. However, John H. Williams suggested moving the project to DreamWorks, leading to the film’s development under Jeffrey Katzenberg after the studio’s establishment in 1994.

The role of Shrek was originally assigned to Chris Farley, who recorded most of his lines before his untimely death in 1997. Mike Myers later took over, opting to voice the character with a Scottish accent. Initially planned as a motion-captured production, Shrek transitioned to a computer-animated format through collaboration with Pacific Data Images. The film’s success positioned DreamWorks Animation as a significant contender to Pixar, grossing $484.4 million globally against a $60 million budget.

Recognized for its blend of adult-oriented humor and child-friendly storytelling, Shrek earned the first Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Additionally, it garnered acclaim from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, winning accolades for its screenplay and voice acting. The movie’s triumph led to the creation of sequels, holiday specials, and a spin-off film.

Shrek’s popularity spawned various merchandise, including video games, a stage musical, and a comic book adaptation. In a remarkable honor, the beloved character received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in May 2010.
